After more than eight hundred years, the mystery of who started the construction of the Tower of Pisa in 1173 has been solved: the sculptor Bonanno Pisano.
The discovery is by Giulia Ammannati, professor of Latin palaeography at the Normale University of Pisa, who deciphered the inscription on a stone found in 1838 near the Leaning Tower:
"I who have certainly raised, founding it, an admirable work above all other, I am the Pisan citizen called Bonanno".
Then the tower began to lean and Bonanno, out of disappointment, threw the stone with the inscription among the scraps.
